Did you know that dogs sometimes require Blood Donors as well as humans? Your dog can save another dog's life by getting involved in our Blood Donation Program!

There are many health conditions that require a blood transfusion for the patient to become better. Some of these health conditions can be severe trauma, blood clotting and bleeding disorders (e.g. Snake bites and rat bait toxicity), anaemia and disease. Sadly over the past few months Maraboon Vet has seen an increase in the number of health conditions that require a Blood transfusion for treatment. Usually our wonderful nurses bring their own dogs in for a donation when required, however they have all donated as much as they can and are now asking for help from all their doggy friends in the central highlands community.

Unfortunately blood can only be stored for up to 4 weeks before it has to be discarded if not used. So we require regular donations to have lifesaving blood on hand when it is needed.

MVS is beginning an amazing superhero blood donation program, if your dog is eligible and willing they can donate blood and receive a yummy meal afterwards and receive a $50 credit on their file to use for their next appointment with us.

We do have a few eligibility criteria listed below to ensure the safety of the Blood Donor and the Patients receiving the blood:

  • Healthy and in good physical condition
  • Friendly and calm temperament
  • Ability to lay still for 10-15 minutes
  • Aged between 1 and 7 years old
  • Minimum body weight of 25kg
  • Fully Vaccinated
  • Heartworm Negative and on heartworm prevention
  • Should not have previously received a blood transfusion

If your dog meets these criteria and are wanting to help save a life, call our friendly team on 07 4987 6800 to become an approved blood donor.
