Most cats do a good job of keeping their coat well groomed, however, as cats get older it can be harder for them to groom themselves for a variety of reasons such as arthritis. It's important to keep your older cat and long-haired breeds well-groomed because an unkempt coat can lead to painful matting in their fur. This can be achieved with regular brushing and/or professional grooming.

Benefits of Regular Grooming

  • Prevent heat stress during warmer seasons
  • Removes loose hair and dead skin cells
  • Prevents hairball formation that can cause intestinal blockages
  • Stimulates oil production for a healthy, shiny coat
  • Provides the opportunity to check for fleas, ear mites, lumps or bumps
  • Reinforces the bond between you and your cat
  • Prevents painful mats and knots
  • Prevents excessive hair shedding

Grooming at Home

Not all cats need professional grooming, you can perform grooming at home if your cat is well-tolerated to brushing and you aren’t finding severe matting. Grooming at home can also be beneficial for in-between your professional grooms.

direction of hair growth. A grooming glove will help remove dead hair and distribute natural oils.

Ensure your cat is relaxed and perform the
groom in a quiet area. Use treats throughout if needed. Using the brush, brush your cat from head to tail in the direction of hair growth, taking extra care of the thin, sensitive skin under the cat’s
armpits and between the hind legs.
Following brushing, use a FURminator to
remove excess hair, again brushing in the
same direction of hair growth.
