Hearing that your pet needs surgery can feel overwhelming. Whether it’s a routine desexing procedure or an emergency operation, it’s completely normal to feel anxious.

At Maraboon Vet, we perform a wide range of surgical procedures right here in our Emerald and Blackwater clinics. Our experienced veterinary team is committed to providing safe, compassionate care, and keeping you informed every step of the way.

Here’s a guide to some of the common surgeries pets may need and how we can help.

Routine Procedures

Desexing

Desexing (spay and neuter surgery) is one of the most common and important surgeries we perform!

This procedure prevents unwanted litters and provides significant health and behavioural benefits, including:

  • Reduced risk of mammary cancer in females

  • Prevention of uterine infections (pyometra)

  • Prevention of testicular cancer in males

  • Reduced roaming, fighting and marking behaviours

If you’d like to learn more about desexing, visit our dedicated page here: https://www.maraboonvet.com.au/desexing-surgery

We use modern anaesthetic protocols, pain relief, and careful monitoring to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety.

Dental Procedures

Dental disease is extremely common in dogs and cats, and it can be painful. Dental procedures may include:

  • Scale and polish (cleaning and polishing of the teeth)

  • Dental x-rays

  • Tooth extractions (if required)

  • Treatment of infected or fractured teeth

Signs your pet may need dental care include bad breath, drooling, difficulty eating, or pawing at the mouth.

Soft Tissue Surgery

Soft tissue surgery refers to procedures involving organs, skin, and other non-bony structures.

Lump Removals & Biopsies

Not all lumps are dangerous, but some can be! Early removal and testing (biopsy) helps us determine whether a mass is benign or cancerous and decide on further treatment if needed.

If you notice a new lump, a lump that’s growing, or one that changes in appearance, it’s best to have it checked.

Abdominal Surgery

Abdominal procedures may be needed for:

  • Foreign body removal (when pets eat something they shouldn’t!)

  • Intestinal blockages

  • Bladder stones

  • Organ issues

Early intervention can be lifesaving, especially in cases involving obstruction or rupture.

Hernia Repairs

Hernias occur when internal tissues push through a weakened area in muscle. These can be congenital (present from birth) or develop later in life. Surgical repair prevents discomfort and potential complications.

Ophthalmic Surgery

Eye conditions can deteriorate quickly and are often painful. We perform a range of ophthalmic procedures to protect vision and relieve discomfort.

Brachycephalic Airway Surgery (BOAS)

Flat-faced breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs can suffer from breathing difficulties due to their anatomy. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) surgery can significantly improve airflow, comfort, and quality of life.

If your pet snores heavily, struggles in the heat, or has noisy breathing, an assessment may be recommended.

Anal Sacculectomy

Chronic anal gland issues can be uncomfortable and frustrating. In severe or recurrent cases, surgical removal of the anal sacs may be the best long-term solution.

Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedic procedures involve bones, joints and ligaments.

Cruciate Ligament Repairs (Including TPLO)

Cruciate ligament injuries are one of the most common causes of hind limb lameness in dogs.

We offer:

  • TPLO (Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy)

  • Lateral suture repairs

  • Other stabilisation techniques

Early diagnosis and treatment help restore mobility and reduce long-term arthritis.

Fracture Repairs

Broken bones can occur due to trauma or accidents. Depending on the injury, treatment may involve plates, pins, or external fixation to stabilise the bone during healing.

Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)

An FHO may be recommended for certain hip injuries or severe arthritis, particularly in smaller dogs and cats. This procedure can relieve pain and improve function.

Amputation

In some cases, such as severe trauma or cancer, amputation may be the kindest and most effective treatment option. Pets adapt remarkably well and can live happy, active lives on three legs.

Emergency Surgery

Some conditions require immediate intervention.

GDV (Bloat)

Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus is a life-threatening emergency where the stomach twists. Immediate surgery is critical.

Symptoms include:

  • Distended abdomen

  • Unproductive retching

  • Restlessness

  • Collapse

If you suspect bloat, contact us immediately.

Wound Repairs

Deep lacerations, bite wounds, and traumatic injuries often require surgical cleaning and repair to reduce infection risk and promote healing.

Caesarean Sections

When labour is not progressing normally, a C-section may be required to safely deliver puppies or kittens.

What to Expect When Your Pet Has Surgery

At Maraboon Vet, your pet’s safety is our priority.

For patients over 7 years of age, or those with specific medical conditions, a pre-anaesthetic blood test may be required. Depending on the procedure and your pet’s individual needs, intravenous fluids may also be administered during their stay.
